POOL TILE UPDATE: Excerpts from the National Plasterers Council Conference.

The key to a successful tile and coping installation has three critical components:

1. Know the substrate you are attaching to is clean enough and appropriate for the installation.
2. Know the bonding material you are attaching with is strong enough and has the proper qualities.
3. Know that the material being attached is appropriate for the installation.

Become familiar with the setting styles whether it is wet set, prefloated, dry set or mechanically supported. Always consider movement joints. They are necessary for a successful installation.

Prior to installation always consider the proper crack isolation preparation. Also, be aware of that full tile pools, spas and fountains have waterproofing requirements for the substrate. You have choices of integral, cementitious, crystallization and elastomeric products. Research your options as there are many good systems available.

Protect your installation at all times during the install process. Cure times and start up considerations are also very important. Maintaining proper water pH levels will help ensure a long life for your tile installation.

There are many technicalities with pool tile lines, full tile pools and even fountains. Always research your installation options, specifications, tile selections and maintenance programs.

Your tile distributor, Ceramic Tile Institute of America, or National Tile Council of America are just a few to name that will be able to assist with pertinent information for a successful installation.
